The Għajn Żnuber tower was vandalized with oil a day after a CCTV camera overlooking the “national heritage” site was hacked and stolen.
Images released by the HPF Ranger Unit show the facade of the historic tower heavily covered in black oil, with the stairs almost completely covered in the substance.
The act of vandalism appears to have taken place overnight between February 10 and 11, while the newly installed CCTV in Majjistral Park was cut between the evening of Wednesday 8 and Thursday morning.
Times of Malta reported that the substance found splattered all over the tower was used motor oil.
“The Żnuber Tower was recently renovated by the Park and we will take the necessary measures to safeguard this piece of National Heritage. Our Rangers will increase their night patrols irrespective of the weather,” HPF Rangers Unit said on social media.
In the meantime, the ranger unit has advised the public to avoid stepping in the area until further notice while thanking them for the quick alert.
They have also assured that they will soon start cleaning the site.
“All officers and authorities have now been informed and the Park Management will begin as soon as possible the clean-up work at the site,” they continued.
“We will continue to patrol the area and do our best to protect the environment and national heritage within the Park.”
If you have any information about the incident, be sure to report it to the police or ranger unit.
