2023 SEDAN AND COROLLA REVIEW
Technical review of the engine
The good
• Goodbye to the 1.8-liter 2ZR engine and hello to the new force-dynamic M20A-FKS engine with Toyota’s D4S dual fuel injection system.
• Electric motor instead of oil pressure driven VVTI (variable valve timing to intake manifold)
the bad guy
• Plastic valve covers of questionable economic appearance
• No manual transmission on sedan or hatchback models. CVT only.
Landing gear overhaul
The good
• Landing gear shielding to protect against the elements
• Added transverse reinforcement for stability
• Improved front and rear suspension
the bad guy
• Lack of full armor coverage in the wheel well fender region
• The catalytic converter is exposed and subject to theft
External review
The good
• The hatchback’s front and rear design elements match and look sharp
• Attractive modern styling of LED headlights adorned both models
• Attractive larger wheels
• Security camera placed higher in the rear logo instead of lower with the bumper
the bad guy
• The sedan’s front and rear design elements look mismatched
Internal review
The good
• Much improved radio/infotainment system
• Simple controls and easy to manage
• One touch cruise control
• Spare tire on the back
• Small design touches that improve life
the bad guy
• There is no improvement in the utility of the script screen; is bigger
• The upgraded radio/infotainment system is a bit buggy
• Annoying knee bumps on the lower dash hump
• The rear seat of the hatchback is small and uncomfortable
• The floor in the back of the hatchback is quite high for loading groceries with less space available, but… you get a spare wheel.
Things the new model mechanic really doesn’t like
• Limited trimming options
Final verdict
• The new hatchback looks sporty…but it’s not, driving up the price without the return a hatchback owner would expect and desire.
• The sedan is a much better buy at a lower price than what you get with the hatchback.
