How do I reset the tire pressure light on my Volkswagen?
The tire pressure light, or TPMS, is perhaps the most common light that appears on the dashboard. The tire pressure monitoring system exists to alert you to changes in tire air pressure. If the pressure drops too low, a warning light on the dashboard will come on. In Volkswagen vehicles, a noise may be heard when the light is switched on.
If you’re driving, having the tire pressure light prompts you to check your tires and inflate them if they’re low, which is great. However, if you have inflated them to the correct level or recently switched to a different set of tires/wheels (think winter set), the light may stay on even when the pressure is correct.
Knowing how to reset the TPMS light is helpful. Not only is the light annoying, but if it’s already on, you could lose your vehicle trying to warn you of low tire pressure. In this article, we will explain how to reset the tire pressure light on your Volkswagen.
Three ways to restore the light
There are three potential ways to reset the TPMS light. It mainly depends on the year and model of your VW.
Glove box reset button
Base VW models and older models will have a button on the back of the glove box. To reset the light, open the glove box, locate the button and hold it until you hear a chime. The light should now be off and the system will reset.
Reset gauge cluster and stock wipers
To reset the TPMS on some early 2000s Volkswagens, you need to press and hold a button on the bottom of the wiper arm (right side), then navigate through the gauge cluster screen to TPMS. From here you can reset the light and the system.
Central stack reset
In many modern Volkswagens, the TPMS system is reset via the multimedia interface (MMI) in the center stack. Simply navigate to vehicle settings, select TPMS and press Set.
