GUILFORD COUNTY, NC (WGHP) – A crash in Guilford County left four people injured Saturday morning, according to Guilford County EMS.
Troopers say the crash happened at 3:42 a.m. on NC Highway 61 near Interstate 40.
It was a two-vehicle crash, according to EMTs. As a result, four people were taken to hospital, three by ambulance and one by Air Care.
EMTs say the person who was taken by Air Care was trapped in his car for an hour before he was successfully extricated. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol describes his injuries as “life-threatening.”
An intrusion on either side of the car made it difficult for emergency medical services to extricate the trapped victim.
Troopers say the crash happened when the driver of a 2017 Honda Accord was traveling west on the exit ramp from I-40 to NC 61 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and drove into the path of a 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling southbound on NC 61.
The two vehicles then collided and the tractor-trailer forced the Accord off the roadway and into a utility pole, according to officers. The driver and three passengers in the Accord suffered serious injuries.
Troopers say the tractor driver was not injured as a result of the troopers.
Impairment is not believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, according to officers. It’s still unclear what caused the Accord driver to fail to stop at the stop sign.
The driver of the Accord was cited for a stop sign violation.
