4 Signs Your Catalytic Converter Is Bad

The catalytic converter is vital to a vehicle’s exhaust system. It can be hard to notice something wrong since it’s not something you see all the time. That said, there are a few things to keep in mind to make you aware that you have a problem.

• Unusual noises – sometimes the vehicle can make a noise. This occurs when internal components wear down and break over time. It will start sounding like rocks in a can.
• Low fuel mileage – A clogged catalytic converter can cause poor fuel consumption. The exhaust is pushing back into the engine, which alters the air fuel ratio thereby affecting the combustion reaction. It will cause a noticeable decrease in fuel consumption. You’ll spend more on gas and get less performance.
• Smell of sulfur – When a catalytic converter no longer works properly, one of the side effects is a bad smell. This smell is produced by the gases that circulate there. In particular, it will have a sulphurous smell. The catalytic converter is a device needed to convert hydrogen sulfide into sulfur dioxide, which is less harmful. If it doesn’t work, this process can’t take place and the end result is an odor not unlike rotten eggs.
• Check engine light – Most of the time, but not always, if it is not working well, the check engine light will go out. You will need to connect an OBD2 scanner to your vehicle to diagnose if this is the cause of the check engine light.
