Renault SM6 (Renault Korea Motors)
The SM6 mid-size sedan from South Korean automaker Renault Korea Motors is a consistent seller in the vast domestic car market along with other major competitors. This is thanks to the commercial value of the model, which is based on a balance between the manufacturer’s heritage and advanced technology.
The automaker highlighted the popular sedan’s state-of-the-art features, including a downsized engine, smooth handling and steering, as well as safety features.
In the past, low oil prices and relatively lax regulations contributed to higher emissions from gasoline engine car manufacturers. However, as times are changing, the growing popularity of green preferences and sustainable choices is influencing companies to take a different path.
Renault is no exception: the manufacturer catered to recent green trends by downsizing the vehicle’s TCe300 engine and reducing the exhaust while maintaining the functionality of important performance factors such as power and torque.
The key to downsizing the engine is a turbocharger, a forced induction device powered by the exhaust gas flow.
However, Renault made sure to maintain the essence of its sporting heritage, which dates back to the group’s beginnings in the 1970s when it began participating in Formula 1, the highest class of international racing. The TCe300 engine in the SM6 maintains the DNA of Renault’s F1 turbo engine and generates a maximum output of 225 horsepower and 30.6 kilogram-meters of torque. From there, it was adapted to be suitable for everyday use.
To optimize the driving experience, the SM6 is also equipped with soft yet weighty handling that adapts to the driver’s desired angle.
The car is the first mid-size sedan in Korea to use a rack-and-pinion premium EPS steering system as standard on all trims. The R-EPS belt manufactured by auto parts supplier ZF-TRW Automotive is an advanced steering method often installed in luxury sports cars such as BMW or Porsche.
Also, the lock-to-lock steering rotation speed is lower than average, clocking in at around 2.6 revolutions. This results in faster reaction speed of the vehicle overall.
The SM6 also appeals to customers by offering several features that prioritize driver safety and comfort while maintaining a reasonable price. This includes a Matrix Vision LED headlight with multiple light controls including adaptive cruise control, lane change assist and autonomous emergency braking.
