Most months there are a few models that are given an extra push with supply-linked incentives and/or an upcoming redesign. Automakers and dealers must make room for new vehicles. There is a lot of space these days, but some models are still more popular than others.
However, transaction prices remain high for most vehicles, and the amount you can save varies greatly by model and even trim. It may seem surprising, but there are many vehicles that sell close to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Supply and demand still rule the day.
For this list, we focused on what people were paying and didn’t limit the selections to models that meet the strict criteria to be recommended by CR. We’ve identified 10 that are selling below sticker price. Clearly, inflation and high gas prices have an impact. There are some high-end models that we skipped from BMW, Maserati and Mercedes-Benz.
In this unusual market, it pays to be flexible because options at dealerships are now limited. In fact, some of these offerings are in a fairly specific version, such as front-wheel drive, when all-wheel drive may be more desirable.
Of course, you may be able to negotiate an even lower price, but keep in mind that there’s a limit to how low prices can go, especially since demand often outstrips supply these days. And as we’ve found when buying test cars, a decent deal can disappear quickly, so you may need to act fast.
Another thing to keep in mind is that offers can vary not only by vehicle but also by geographic region. Being armed with the latest information on prices, discounts and transaction prices in your area can help you get a good deal.
The most discounted cars are all 2023 models, and are listed below in descending order of MSRP savings by percentage. Other buyers have recently bought these vehicles for 2 to 6 percent off the original price.
Pricing details for these versions and other trims are available on our model pages, along with full road tests, reliability, owner satisfaction and other key information. CR members can log in to view car ratings.
Although these deals are relatively good, it is advisable to shop when the time is right. Dealers are happy to sell you a car at any time. But the market is likely to improve, so waiting might be a good idea. (If you want to buy now, read about CR Build & Buy’s car buying service below.)
