If your car’s heat blows cold air when you try to start it, there may be a problem with the vent door or combination door actuator. Find out how this can cause this problem, how to fix it and other parts that can leave your car blowing cold air when you turn on the heat with these tips in this video from our expert mechanic Andy.
Car parts that can cause heat to blow cold air
Maybe the car heat only blows hot on one side and cold on the other or doesn’t work when it’s on. You may also hear a noise from behind the dash vents when you try to turn on the heat.
Bad Blend door actuator
If you hear a noise inside the board along with the heat not working, the problem is most likely the mix gate actuator. The mixing door actuators connect to the heater box. The heater box is located below the dash and houses parts such as the fan motor and heater core.
The mixing door actuator opens and closes the mixing door in the heater box. The combination door helps direct airflow when you turn on the AC or heat. If there is a problem with the blend door, it can also cause the heat to not work in the car.
Sometimes you can access the blend door actuator from under the glove box. They are held together by a few screws and an electrical connector and are usually easy to replace.
Bad Blend Porta
After removing the mix door actuator, you may find a broken knob that controls the mix door. You can turn the knob and hear the mixing door move inside the heater box. It should open and close as you turn the knob. If the mix door is stuck, the knob will not open or close the door, but instead rotates in place. The button should also not be loose where it can be pulled and pulled or up and down. If this is the problem, replacing the mix gate actuator will not fix it.
To fix the mix port, you’ll need to have the coolant recovered by a professional, since the AC evaporative core is inside the heater housing. You will also need to remove internal components to access the mixing port, such as the dash.
